The Gills will entertain Torquay United this weekend hoping to pick up that all elusive win that will put them back in touch with the play-offs.
The second game at Priestfield this week could see Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler keep faith with the game starting eleven that ground out a goalless draw with Rotherham United on Tuesday night.
That would see Simon King making his third consecutive start despite fears over how his ankle would hold up game after game.
One player that could find himself back in the Gillingham squad is midfielder Charlie Lee, but he may have to make do with a place amongst the substitutes.
Meanwhile, Danny Spiller is nearing a return to the side, but realistically needs a few reserve games under his belt before being considered for the first team.
Therefore, The Gills could line up like this:
Gazzaniga, Evans, Essam, King, Jackman, Tomlin, J Payne, Weston, Whelpdale, Kuffour, Kedwell.
Subs: Hawkes, Martin, C Lee, O Lee, Montrose.
Starting the game eight points outside the play-offs means The Gills would see anything other than a win as a failure.
With just sixteen games left to go in the season, Hessenthaler’s side need to go on a decent run to push for a top seven spot, which would have been the minimum target at the start of the season.
Meanwhile, Torquay midfielder Damon Lathrope is certain to miss the trip to Priestfield.
The 22-year-old suffered ankle ligament damage in a 1-0 victory over Cheltenham and the League Two clash at Priestfield will come too soon for him.
Gulls boss Martin Ling could call on former Gills on loan striker Rene Howe to reinvigorate his starting XI after a run of seven straight league victories came to an abrupt end with a 2-1 home defeat to Bradford last week.
Defender Angus McDonald was an unused substitute against the Bantams but could graduate from the bench to make his debut against the Gills.
Ling is keeping one eye on the loan market as he looks to bolster his squad for a promotion push, telling the Herald Express: “I’ve got a list of players I’m working through.
“We will fetch in the right people to make the team and the squad stronger.”
